How To Get More Customers for Your Small Business (12 Moves That Actually Work)

Every owner asks the same question: how do I get more customers? And almost every owner reaches for the same answer: more advertising.
That's usually the most expensive answer available. You're competing against 36.2 million other small businesses in the U.S., according to the SBA Office of Advocacy's 2025 Small Business Profiles. Outspending them is not a plan.
Here's the better order of operations: plug the leaks first, then squeeze more out of the customers you already have, and only then go buy new attention. The list below runs in that order.
First, Stop the Bleeding (These Cost Almost Nothing)
You already have people trying to give you money. Some of them are failing.
1. Answer faster. Not better, faster. When someone calls three businesses, the one that responds first usually wins, before quality or price ever enters the conversation. The data behind that is in our speed to lead guide.
2. Catch after-hours visitors. Your website gets traffic at 9pm, on Sundays and on holidays. If the only options are a voicemail box and a form promising a reply tomorrow, you are donating those people to competitors. See missed calls and after-hours leads.
3. Put your prices, or a starting price, on the site. “How much?” is the number one question. Making people call to find out doesn't create a conversation, it creates a bounce.
4. Shorten your forms. Every extra field costs you leads. Name, phone, and what they need. Get the rest later.
5. Make the phone number tap-to-call on mobile and put it at the top of every page.
Then Mine the Customers You Already Have
The cheapest customer you will ever get is the one who already paid you once.
6. Ask for reviews, by email, the same day. BrightLocal's 2025 Local Consumer Review Survey found 96% of consumers are open to writing a review for a business, and that email is the most effective way to ask, working 40% of the time. Most owners simply never ask.
7. Build a simple referral offer. “Send me a neighbor, get $25 off your next service.” Write it on the invoice. That's the whole program.
8. Reactivate dormant customers. Pull the list of everyone who hasn't bought in a year and send one honest message: here's what's new, here's an offer, here's how to book.
9. Raise your average ticket instead of your customer count. One add-on, one upgrade, one maintenance plan. Same number of customers, more revenue, no new marketing spend.
Then Get Found by People Already Looking
10. Claim and fill out your Google Business Profile completely: hours, services, service area, photos, and reply to every review. For local businesses this outperforms almost anything else you can do for free.
11. Write pages that answer real questions. Not “Welcome to our website,” but the exact things people type: what it costs, how long it takes, whether you serve their town. That's how both Google and AI assistants find you and recommend you.
12. Only then, buy traffic. Ads work, but they work best pointed at a site that already converts. Sending paid clicks to a leaky site is how you end up convinced that “marketing doesn't work.” Fix the site first with how to increase your website conversion rate.
The One That Does Double Duty
There's one change that covers numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 at the same time: an AI assistant on your website.
It answers instantly, works after hours, tells people what things cost, and collects the name and number without a long form. It is the only item on this list that plugs four leaks with one install.
And customers are already used to it. Pew Research Center reports that 44% of U.S. adults said they use ChatGPT in early 2026, more than double the 18% in 2023. Typing a question and getting a straight answer is just how people shop now.
How To Actually Start This Week
Don't do twelve things. Do three.
- Monday: visit your own website on your phone at 9pm and try to buy from yourself. Write down every point where you'd give up.
- Tuesday: fix the two worst ones. Usually that's no visible price and no instant way to get an answer.
- Wednesday: email your last 20 customers and ask for a review.
That's a week's work and it will out-earn a month of ads for most local businesses.

What is the fastest way to get more customers for a small business? +
Respond faster to the leads you already get. Most local businesses lose more customers to slow replies and after-hours silence than to a lack of traffic.
How can I get customers without spending money on ads? +
Ask every customer for a review, set up a simple referral offer, reactivate past customers, complete your Google Business Profile and make it easy to get a price on your website.
How many customers should a small business expect from its website? +
It depends on traffic and industry, but most local sites convert a low single-digit percentage of visitors. Doubling that rate doubles your leads without any new traffic.
Do online reviews really bring in new customers? +
They influence the decision heavily. BrightLocal's 2025 survey found 96% of consumers are open to writing reviews and that nearly half read an AI-generated review summary before reading individual reviews.
Should I hire someone to answer the phone? +
Maybe eventually. But most owners get a bigger return first from capturing website visitors who were never going to call at all.
